신선하고 독특한 음악으로 60년대 세계 대중음악을 장았댔던 전설적 그룹 비틀즈 그리고 그 전설적 명성을 뒤로하고 화려한 무대가 아닌 민중 시위 현장에서 모습을 드러내기 시작한 존 레논! 비틀즈 이후, "Gove peace a chance!" 라는 슬로건 아래 음악과 반전 현화 시위 운동을 통해 미국으로 대변되는 기득권 세력의 권력횡포에 정면 승부했던 존 레논의 긴박하고 드라마틱했던 시간을 기록한 흥미진진한 다큐멘터리 영화.

존 레논과 그의 활동에 대해 이야기하는 수 많은 사람들. 데이비드 리프와 존 쉐인펠드 감독은 <존 레논 컨피덴셜>을 단지 역사적 사건만을 나열하는 식의 다큐멘터리 영화에 그치는 것이 아니라 당시 존 레논과 함께 시대를 살았던 다양한 인사들의 생생한 증언을 택해 가장 현실적인 존 레논의 진실에 한 발짝 더 다가선 다큐멘터리 영화로 완성시켰다.

<존 레논 컨피덴셜>을 만들기 위해 2005년 4월 이미 존 싱클레어와 인터뷰를 마친 데이비드 리프와 존 쉐인펠드 감독은 2005년 7월 본격적으로 <존 레논 컨피덴셜> 제작 과정에 착수한다. 두 감독은 당시 FBI 요주의 대상이었던 안젤라 데이비스 교수, 블랙팬더당의 리더 바비 씰, 이피 멤버였던 스튜 앨버트, 뉴욕계 푸에르토리코인 단체 ‘영 로드’의 대변인이자 방송인인 제랄도 리비에라 등 존 레논을 알고 있거나 함께 사건을 겪었던 주변 인물들의 인터뷰부터 시작한다.

그리고 존 레논을 감시하는 임무를 맡았던 두 명의 전직 FBI요원들과 닉슨 대통령의 수뇌부였던 G. 고든 리디와 존 딘, 1972년 선거 당시 닉슨의 라이벌이었던 민주당 후보 조지 맥거번까지 두 감독은 존 레논을 감시하던 당시 정부 쪽 인사들의 인터뷰까지 화면에 담아낸다. 뿐만 아니라 인터뷰 후 ‘존 레논이나 그의 음악에 대해 전혀 모른다’라고 고백하기까지 한 전 뉴욕 주지사 마리오 쿠오모를 인터뷰, 존 레논이 미국에서 일련의 사건을 겪었을 당시 정부의 입장이나 정치적 상황까지 가장 객관적으로 존 레논과 당시 사건에 접근한다.

마지막으로 존 레논과 그가 말하고자 했던 진실을 누구보다도 잘 이해하고 있는 존 레논의 동반자 오노 요코에 이르기까지 데이비드 리프 감독과 존 쉐인펠드 감독은 모든 인터뷰를 직접 따내며 2006년 겨울까지 영화를 위한 다양한 인사들의 주요한 인터뷰를 확보했다.
